- Designed by Messerschmitt and Lusser in 1934, the Bf 109 was one of the first modern aircraft of the era. Features such as a liquid-cooled V-12 engine, a closed canopy and retractable landing gear made the Bf 109 a huge improvement over WWI fighters. The "G-6" variant, which appeared late in WWII, had a more powerful engine with superchargers and also came with many field adjustment kits. These kits allowed the G-6 to be fielded with extra guns, rockets, bombs or extra fuel tanks, making it a highly versatile fighter.
